PILATES (for every body)

photos by Ryan Mekenian

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. -Joseph Pilates

The Pilates method, developed by Joseph Pilates after World War I, is a system of exercises using the pure weight of the body and special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness. Originally known as 'Contrology', the technique focuses on six core principles: Concentration, Control, Centering, Efficiency of Movement, Precision, and Breathing.

Clare Cook, began her study of Pilates as a graduate student at NYU under the tutelage of Pilates elder, Kathy Grant - one of the original teachers to be trained under Joseph Pilates. Upon graduation from NYU, Clare worked closely with Ms. Grant as her teaching assistant and demonstrator at NYU between 2008-2010. She is now on faculty teaching pilates in the NYU Dance Department, and also teaches mat classes and private clients throughout the NYC area. Her teaching approach blends classical and contemporary pilates techniques to devise an exercise program unique and effective for each client - dancers, athletes, fitness afficianados, writers, actors, mothers, teachers and the list goes on. Everyone can benefit from pilates as it gives your body the strength and agility to deal with the work and joy of living, both physically and mentally.

Clare holds teaching certifications from Power Pilates, The Kane School, and Balanced Body University. In addition to her training with Kathy Grant, she continues her own pilates practice with Blossom Leilani-Crawford at Bridge Pilates.
